Silverstein - Massachusetts Lyrics Meaning

At face value it is clearly a song about a woman in an physically and emotionally abusive relationship with a man who constantly apologises after hurting her. Although she wants to leave she is still telling herself that maybe things will improve if she just stays a little longer, each time. She thinks about what it would be like if she just cut all emotional ties and simply left although she never does.

On a deeper level though, it could be a metaphor for a point in one's life when one decides that maybe they should start something new or stop repeating something that is obviously causing negative effects on themselves even though they've gotten so used to it that they keep finding reasons not to change.
