The Meaning Behind The Song: Endless Night by Original Broadway Cast of The Lion King

Song lyrics:

[ENSEMBLE]
Hem
Hem, hem
Hem, hem

[SIMBA]
Where has the starlight gone?
Dark is the day
How can I find my way home?
Home is an empty dream
Lost to the night
Father, I feel so alone

You promised you’d be there
Whenever I needed you
Whenever I call your name
You’re not anywhere
I’m trying to hold on
Just waiting to hear your voice
One word, just a word will do
To end this nightmare

When will the dawning break
Oh, endless night
Sleepless I dream of the day
When you were by my side
Guiding my path
Father, I can’t find the way

You promised you’d be there
Whenever I needed you
Whenever I call your name
You’re not anywhere
I’m trying to hold on
Just waiting to hear your voice
One word, just a word will do
To end this nightmare

[ENSEMBLE]
I know that the night must end
And that the sun will rise
And that the sun will rise
I know that the clouds must clear
And that the sun will shine
And that the sun will shine

[ENSEMBLE and SIMBA]
I know that the night must end
And that the sun will rise
And that the sun will rise
I know that the clouds must clear
And that the sun will shine
And that the sun will shine

Album title: The Lion King (Original Broadway Cast Recording) (1997)

Simba, raised in the jungle by Timon and Pumbaa, is beginning to open up about the past he had mostly kept hidden.

As the three friends settle down to sleep, they discuss the stars above them, with Simba recalling his father Mufasa’s words about the Great Kings of the Past always looking down on them. Timon and Pumbaa dismiss this as a joke, causing the distraught Simba to leave and wander off alone. Simba begins to express his loneliness and despair, bitterly recalling his father’s seemingly broken promise that he would always be there for his son. However, as the song progresses, Simba gains hope that one day he will find his life’s meaning again.

Rafiki hears Simba’s song carrying on the wind and, with great excitement, realizes that the lion is still alive and not deceased as Scar had said.

The melody for this song is based on the track “Lala?? from the 1995 album Rhythm of the Pride Lands, a sort-of sequel to the movie’s official soundtrack. Parts of “Lala?? were also used in the movie’s soundtrack as Simba follows Rafiki to the pool where he sees the reflection of his father Mufasa. The usage of the melody in all its appearances is deeply evocative of the sadness that Simba feels.
