The Meaning Behind The Song: Hummingbird by Metro Boomin & James Blake

Hummingbird is the fifth song on the official soundtrack for Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse. Adding to the list of the multiple collaborations between Metro Boomin and James Blake, Hummingbird is a soft piano-laced track with underlying trap instrumentals that creates a chill atmosphere within the track.

When I first heard the song Hummingbird by Metro Boomin and James Blake, it immediately grabbed my attention with its soothing melody and heartfelt lyrics. The song explores themes of longing, finding solace in someone, and the realization that love can be both unconditional and within reason.

The song opens with the refrain sung by James Blake, “Hummingbird, summer song, has it brought my life back? Hangin’ in the balance, have you brought the light back?” These lines evoke a sense of hope and renewal, as if the hummingbird represents a symbol of new beginnings and positive change. The hummingbird, often associated with joy and resilience, becomes a metaphor for a person or relationship that brings light and happiness into one’s life.

In the first verse, James Blake sings, “When I saw a cold snap, I wasn’t with the season. Tag was on the ankle, and outside, there was a ceiling. In here, paper walls are pushin’ back on you like eventually you push through the moment that you realize.” These lyrics depict a feeling of detachment and confinement, as if the narrator is trapped in a cold and stagnant period of their life. However, there is a glimmer of hope as they recognize the possibility of pushing through and finding a moment of realization.

The chorus repeats the phrase “And hummingbird, I know that’s our time, but stay on, stay on with me.” Here, the hummingbird represents a fleeting moment of happiness or connection that the narrator wants to hold on to. They acknowledge that their time together may be limited, but they long for the hummingbird to stay with them, symbolizing the desire for a lasting and meaningful relationship.

In the second verse, James Blake sings, “The moment when you realize there’s someone there that needs you. Lap band on the feelings, I tax them for no reason. I added love ’cause love is unconditional, I count on love, I count on love ’cause love is unconditional within reason.” These lyrics delve into the complexities of love, recognizing that it is both unconditional and yet requires boundaries. The narrator acknowledges their own tendency to withhold love and tax their emotions, but also acknowledges the importance of love and the role it plays in their life.

The bridge of the song poses the question, “Would I sign up again?” This line reflects a moment of reflection and contemplation, as the narrator considers whether they would choose to enter into a relationship or experience again, despite the potential challenges and uncertainties that may come with it.

Overall, Hummingbird by Metro Boomin and James Blake is a beautifully introspective song that explores themes of love, self-reflection, and the desire for connection. It takes listeners on a journey of contemplation, reminding us of the importance of cherishing fleeting moments of happiness and finding solace in the presence of others.
