Best Phil Wickham Songs of All Time

A little background info

Phil was born and raised in a Christian home in San Diego, California. Despite having been a young boy in the excess of the 80s and a teen and young man through the generation X nineties, his path in life was laid out clearly.

He was leading his first worship for youth groups at the age of thirteen. Wickham’s family members encouraged him to learn popular songs and to write his own from an early age. His parents were both members of the group, Parable.

Playing to his strength…

Phil Wickham’s single “This Is Amazing Grace” has been certified platinum and topped the year-end Christian airplay chart in 2014. He has also had the privilege to lead worship at Soul Survivor.

So, here are my picks for the best songs by Phil Wickham, starting with…

Top 12 Best Phil Wickham Songs of All Time

1Your Love Awakens Me

Album: Children Of God

“A year and a half ago, I lost my voice. I knew something was up, and I had to see a doctor. I was forced to have surgery on my vocal cords, and I had to be silent for six weeks after the surgery.

He thought I would be back to normal, but there was a small chance and a risk of not being capable of singing professionally again.”

Phil described this experience to Kevin Davis for the 714th edition of “Behind the Song.” And, if you are interested in it, I highly recommend you read the full interview as it is very inspirational.

Keeping the faith…

Phil’s faith in being able to regain his ability to record and, more importantly, perform is what ultimately helped him go through this troublesome time in his life. Despite many signs to the contrary, he remained certain that the answer to his affliction would present itself.

As with many of his other songs, this one is all about giving thanks to God for what he provides. Even when we do not immediately realize the worth of his gifts. While there are many verses cited as having relevance to this one, in particular stood out.

“But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions–it is by grace you have been saved.” – Ephesians 2:4-5

2Shining

Album: Cannons

This one has historical and personal importance not only to Wickhamfans but to Wickham himself, I’m sure. Shining could be considered Phil Wickham’s first hit song. It came off his debut album, Cannons, which was released when he was only eighteen years of age.

It must have given him great courage and reason to strengthen his belief. The path he chose to follow was yielding positive results, and the Almighty was lighting the way. The best part was, that he was only getting started.

3Till I Found You

Album: Living Hope

This was a massive hit for Wickman, peaking at #9 on the US-Hot Christian songs chart. But, it also remains a song that reminds him of one of the most profound moments of grace and inspiration that he has ever experienced.

“Till I Found You” was inspired by a moment of beauty that struck Phil while he was leading worship at his church. His heart was taken by the number of people who came forward to the experience and hear the gospel.

Seeing is believing…

This experience inspired him, and he, along with Travis Ryan, began to pen what would become “Till I Found You.”

The song crossed over to a wide audience. Not only because of its beautifully rendered message but because of its contemporary Electronic R&B tone as well. If the lyrics on one of Phil Wickham’s most well known songs don’t get you hooked, the grooves sure will.

4You Cannot Be Stopped

Album: You Cannot Be Stopped

I sometimes feel as though this song is very underrated. But then again, you can’t change how many people relate to a certain song.

This song was co-written by Wickham and Chris Quilala from the Jesus Culture Band. It reminds us that we should have no fear of being deterred from our paths when our faith remains intact because nothing can deter the plans of the Almighty.

The phrasing and arrangement of this song are just as worthy of praise as the message and the lyrics. If you listen with a critical ear, you’ll be surprised by the layers of depth to be found in the production. It’s the perfect musical complement to the spiritual message embedded in the song.

5Safe (feat. Bart Millard)

Album: Heaven & Earth

When you look at the central principles of the bible’s teachings, Hope is a theme that you will come across frequently. Especially in situations that seem hopeless, we find that in God’s wisdom, he makes his children spark fires in the darkest of places.

“Safe” was not initially rewarded with a lot of attention when it was first released in 2009. However, the song began to grow in the hearts of listeners. Eventually, it garnered immense critical praise for its songwriting and vocal performances by Wickham and featured artist Bart Millard.

Safe climbed to #4 on the Billboards U.S Christian songs chart. As a result, it is one of Phil Wickham’s most popular songs.

6The Ascension

Album: The Ascension

This album solidified Phil Wickham’s name in the cement of modern Christian music. It was a step up for him in terms of songwriting, production, singing, and his reach as an artist.

This is the title track from that album, and it highlights something that builds the foundation for deep and lasting faith.

A life without knowing God is one of uncertainty and instability. When we strive to develop our bond with him, we begin to be more surefooted in our faith. When we begin to build our faith through seeking God in our lives, we can ascend.

7Children of God

Album: Children Of God

At the core of Christian belief is the importance of family, whether it is chosen or blood. We strengthen our bond as a family in blood and faith through the sharing of our experiences, emotions, and thoughts.

Sometimes, that which we must endure or bear witness to is not pleasant. But, it is the healing that comes from it that pushes us forward. “Children of God” is the title track from the album that gave the song its name.

The road to redemption…

This song came after Phil had recovered from his vocal injury. After months of uncertainty as to whether he would be able to record and sing again, his faith was rewarded, and he returned to the world of music with this incredible album.

In this song, he shares some of his journey, and hearing it will spark warmth in the heart of any person of faith.

8The Secret Place

Album: Children Of God

Spending time alone with God daily is something so few of us can do as often as we should. Although, when we feel the indescribable urge to commune with the Almighty, or we are perhaps in a moment of despair, we reach out because we feel we have no other option left.

There are many parts of this song that brought me to passages in the Scriptures. Especially the books of Psalms, Mathew, and Corinthians. For me, this is one of the best Phil Wickham songs of all time because of its simple message.

9Messiah/You’re Beautiful

Album: Cannons

God has had many of his children bring him glory in a multitude of ways. Phil does this through his music. I’m quite sure that at the heart of every one of his songs lies a desire to bring glory and love to the Almighty.

A beautiful world…

“Messiah/You Are Beautiful” is a song all about realizing the majesty of our Lord. As well as celebrating our lives as his creation within the light of that majesty.

Phil told one interviewer that the idea for “Messiah” came to him while he was attending a youth worship camp. A preacher there spoke about the abundance we can perceive in God’s creation.

The incredible love for his creation is one of the greatest aspects of the Almighty. And, as his children, we have a front-row seat to all that marvel. Musically, this song is also a joy, with some of the most beautiful melodies and sounds in all of Phil’s catalog.

10Great Things

Album: Living Hope

This is the opening track from Phil’s fantastic 2018 album, Living Hope. As a member of the Harvest Christina fellowship, Phil wanted to come up with worship material that he could use to open services.

It needed to suit the tastes of the audience but still contain the right message of the gospel. Phil had help from Jonas Myrin when it came to the writing and Jonathan Smith when it came to the production.

11Living Hope

Album: Living Hope

The conception of this masterpiece track is as miraculous as the song itself. The song was co-written alongside Brian Johnson from Bethel Music through text. Yes, you read that right, text.

It ranks among Phil Wickham’s greatest songs. Not only because of how amazing it sounds but because it contains everything you need to discover God and Phil in less than six minutes.

“Living Hope” entered the Hot Christians Songs Chart at #35 and peaked at #10 after thirty-five weeks. It also won a GMA Dove Award for the Recorded Worship Song of the Year.

12This is Amazing Grace

Album: The Ascension

I know you were waiting for this one. Often the recipe for a great song is a simple one, and this is surely the case when it comes to this track. Phil wrote some direct and passionate lyrics, which he imbued with even more meaning by using his musical talent.

The song expresses the most wondrous thing in existence, and that is God’s love. If you feel like basking in the wonder of how amazing God’s love is, this is the perfect song.

“This Is Amazing Grace” has been certified platinum and peaked at #4 in the US Christian Albums chart in 2014. As a result, it is one of the most successful Phil Wickham songs ever produced.
