This is one of my favourite songs. A married man has an affair with a woman whom he falls in love with and leaves his wife. He realises after living with his lover he has made a terrible mistake and wants to return home to his wife. He has hurt his wife terribly and begs her to forgive him. He remembers all the good times they had together & the wonderful memories and realises he is still in love with her. He phones her one night tells her he wants her back and what has been happening in his life. He is totally surprised at her answer (she had never stopped loving him) and is overwhelmed that she said he can come home.
